On 24 June 2025, a lecture by Professor Vladimír Šlapeta—one of the most prominent Czech architectural historians—was held at the Prague House in Brussels. Professor Šlapeta presented the key stages in the development of Czech architecture from the early 20th century to the present day, placing them in the broader context of the European architectural landscape.
The lecture followed the official launch of the publication Czech Modern Architecture and the opening of the accompanying exhibition of the same name, which took place earlier that afternoon at the European Parliament. Special thanks go to the Association of Regions of the Czech Republic (AKČR) and to the individual regions for their contribution to making this event possible.
The evening program began at 7:00 PM with a welcome speech by Lucie Čadilová, Director of the Prague House in Brussels, who greeted the guests and introduced the evening’s agenda. She was followed by Thomas Vonier, former President of the International Union of Architects (UIA), who delivered international greetings and emphasized the importance of Czech architecture for both Brussels and the global architectural scene.
Professor Šlapeta then spoke about the international significance of architectural works throughout the Czech Republic—not only in major cities such as Prague, Brno, and Zlín, but also in other regions, including the distinctive architecture of the borderlands of the Sudeten region.
The highlight of the evening was the screening of two unique historical videos: the first was a period family film from the Müller Villa, and the second featured rare footage from Zlín, capturing a jury session of an international housing competition. The jury included renowned figures such as Le Corbusier, František Lydie Gahura, Vladimír Karfík, Dušan Jurkovič, Pavel Janák, Bohuslav Fuchs, and the director of the Baťa company, Tomáš Baťa.
The lecture concluded at 8:30 PM and was followed by an informal reception, during which guests had the opportunity to engage in conversation with Professor Šlapeta and deepen their understanding of Czech architecture.
In conclusion, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Director Lucie Čadilová and the Prague House team for their outstanding collaboration and warm professionalism in organizing this event. We also extend our thanks for the patronage of Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda and the generous support of the City of Prague. We also thank KKCG Real Estate for their kind support of this publication.
Special thanks go to photographer Dagmar Kneřová and architect Daniel Perogordo Madrid for documenting the evening.
