Irving Smith Architects has been developed as a research based architecture practice working in a variety of sensitive environments throughout New Zealand and abroad.

The practice’s has been widely published and recognised with a string of architecture awards, including winning World Villa of the Year at the 2017 World Architecture Festival in Berlin, being Highly Commended at WAF Singapore 2015, and a finalist 2011 WAF Barcelona, and 2013, 2014 Singapore. They have been nominated for the New Zealand Architectural medal (highest award in NZ architecture), won multiple New Zealand Architecture awards in Public and Residential categories, NZ’s top Residential and Commercial Timber Design awards, and commendation from the NZ Concrete Society. In 2015 represented New Zealand at the 2015 Prague International Architecture Festival, where their Soft Context : Soft Architecture exhibition presented an approach of participating with existing landscapes rather than generate new contexts, and ongoing research includes teaching a Masters level iterative based design studio at the University of Auckland.
