“Housing is not only a basic human need, but also a key element of a city’s identity.”
The exhibition Housing in Prague, organised by the International Festival of Architecture and Urbanism Architecture Week Prague, presents the development and current state of housing in the Czech capital through two parallel perspectives – historical and contemporary. The exhibition will traditionally take place at the Mánes Exhibition Hall from 21 September to 11 October 2026 and will be open daily from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The aim of the exhibition is to introduce Prague residents and visitors to the current state of housing and the long-term vision for the city’s development. At the same time, it seeks to connect professional reflection with public discussion on housing in Prague. The exhibition traces the development of housing from the establishment of Greater Prague in 1922 to the present day, while also giving space to individual city districts to present their plans and future visions.
The exhibition is divided into several thematic sections. The historical section (1922–1989) will feature panels with archival materials, models and period plans. It will present, among other topics, the urban visions of Antonín Engel, the development of housing colonies and estates, and the evolution of social housing.
The contemporary section (1990–2050) will offer an interactive overview of more than 80 current and planned projects by the City of Prague and its city districts. This section will be complemented by audiovisual presentations, large-format photographs, and a giant orthophoto map of Prague with architectural models.
The exhibition is being prepared in cooperation with the City of Prague, the Prague City Archives, and individual city districts. Visitors will gain a comprehensive overview of all current housing projects within the territory of Prague and will also learn about plans currently being prepared for the city’s future. The overall exhibition will include presentations of projects by individual city districts and will be strongly supported by audiovisual and interactive elements.
Subject to agreement with the City of Prague, admission will be free of charge, ensuring the exhibition is accessible to all residents of Prague.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a rich programme of lectures, panel discussions, guided tours, workshops, and evening film screenings followed by discussions.
Housing in Prague is an open invitation to a dialogue about how we want to live in the city – today and tomorrow.
