Curriculum Vitae Dipl. Ing. Peter Gero

Born in Bratislava. Studies at the Slovak University of Technology, Building Faculty, studying branch of engineering structures and transport buildings. In 1968 emigration to the Federal Republic of Germany, Hamburg. Studies of urban development in West Berlin, completed with the second-level state final examination. Active in Hamburg, planning and concepts of construction of the underground city railway (U-Bahn) network, design of its stations, public areas and bridges. Coordination of rather komplex urban development concepts of he City of Hamburg, management of the expert group of the Land Minister for Construction and Development. Cooperation on the drawing up of the first concepts for Hafen City Hamburg, organisation of international discussions focused on this topic, technical review of results. Head of the Department for City Development and Revitalisation.
Main focus: revitalisation of large-scale housing estates of the 1960s and 1970s, of the City centre quarters, such as St. Georg, St. Pauli, with solution of architectonic and urban development issues. Chief Building Director of “Baudezernent” of the central parts of Hamburg. This supervisory position for the entire construction process combined technical knowledge of architecture, urban development, city development with interconnection to regional planning, state sector constructions (schools, hospitals, opera, etc.), construction of roadways, greenery and nature protection, building permits. This position on which he was working for more than 12 years included, apart from coordination of technical elements of city construction, also the activities in approximately 40 urban development and architectonic juries where he worked as an expert jury member. One of the important activities was the selection of architects and urban development experts, greenery designers and landscape architects in an international context.
Most projects affected in such a comprehensive way have already been implemented or are just situated in the construction process. The activities for the creation of the Masterplan and Architecture for HafenCity – the largest current project in Europe, the exhibition centre situated in the central zone of the city, concepts for the “fundamental cell” of the city, known as Domplatz, and creation of a new quarter in St. Pauli in the place of a former brewery are grounds for creation of the image of the City of Hamburg today.
This last of the above mentioned projects was appreciated also at the “Expo Real” event held in Munich as the most successful project of rehabilitation/revitalisation of an inner-city district in Germany. After completion of more than 30 years of his active work for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2007, Peter Gero has been active as a lecturer, honorary participant of expert conferences on architecture and urban development, member of expert juries, adviser for developers, municipal institutions and co-operator of young teams of architects for creation of their competing designs.
